Sage - Salvia officinalis

A semi-shrubby ornamental and culinary perennial having somewhat large, wrinkled, strongly aromatic gray-green leaves that are frequently used fresh or dried in seasoning a variety of dishes. Sage also features whorls of showy, two-lipped, lavender-blue flowers in short, upright spikes in late spring. The leaves have a savory, slightly peppery flavor. Historically thought to have medicinal value, this is a standard herb garden plant. Also quite effective mixed with perennials in borders, cottage gardens, and wild or naturalized plantings; also great in containers. Attracts butterflies and bees; tolerates deer, drought, dry soil, and shallow-rocky soil. Grow in dry to medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun. Tolerates very light shade, but best in full sun. Wet soils can be fatal. 2-2.5'H x 2-2.5'W. USDA Zones 4-8.
