A biennial herb commonly grown as an annual for ornamental, medicinal, and culinary purposes; it is also a staple food for several species of wildlife. Similar in use, appearance, growth, and maintenance requirements to cilantro (Coriandrum sativum). Having pretty, bright green ruffled leaves, this plant works wonderfully for garden borders, window boxes, hanging baskets, and containers; used to flavor and garnish a plethora of warm and cold dishes around the world. Some swallowtail butterflies it as a host plant for their larvae - caterpillars (striped black and green with yellow dots) feed on foliage for two weeks before turning into butterflies; bees and other nectar-feeding insects visit the showy, yellow-green flowers; goldfinch and other birds feed on the seeds. Parsley is high in vitamin A, vitamin C, several of the B complex vitamins, and a number of minerals including potassium, iron, copper, and manganese.
