Elettaria cardamomum (cardamom)
A pungently aromatic herbaceous plant. The green seed pods are dried and the seeds inside are used in Indian and other Asian cuisines, either whole or in a ground form. Cardamom will flower and fruit only under tropical conditions. In sub-tropical or temperate regions it makes an attractive foliage plant in a warm greenhouse. The foliage is spear-shaped and aromatic. Can get as tall as 12' under ideal conditions. The houseplant prefers consistent moisture and a constant temperature around 72° F is best, as the plant will suffer at temperatures below 50° F. Avoid direct sunlight. USDA Zones 10-12.
